Why You're Reading This Book:

  • You're a historical fiction fan.
What's the Story?:

From Goodreads.com: "Rome under Nero is a dangerous place. His cruel artistic whims border on madness, and any man who dares rise too high has his wings clipped, with fatal results.

For one family, Nero means either promotion or destruction. While his uncle Vespasian goes off to put down a rebellion in Judea, Titus Flavius Sabinus struggles to walk the perilous line between success and notoriety as he climbs Rome's ladder. When Nero is impaled on his own artistry, the whole world is thrown into chaos and Sabinus must navigate shifting allegiances and murderous alliances as his family tries to survive the year of the Four Emperors."

My Two Cents:

Oh, Ancient Rome, the more I read about you, the more I love you! Colossus: The Four Emperors is the second book in David Blixt's series about Ancient Rome. Even though it is the second book, you can definitely pick up this book and follow along with the action with no problem. I actually have not read the first book myself but after reading this book, I definitely want to go back and read the previous book!

When this story opens, Nero is emperor and what an emperor he was! Nero is one of those figures that you love to hate. Oh and he is so evil in this book. There is a ton of good description in this book that really made Nero and his court come to life for me. You can really picture what it must have been like to see all of that wheeling and dealing must have been like to witness.

If you know anything about Ancient Rome and if the title of this book gave you a hint, this book also covers the year that there were four emperors in Rome (yup, four!). The book follows Sabinus, who I really liked reading about. It was so interesting to follow a character who is so intimately involved in the uproar of this year that really changed history for Rome. Blixt really has a way with making his characters jump off the page; these are characters that you will truly enjoy reading about!

  1. I'm on this tour and reviewed today too. I felt the same way you did and gave it a similar rating. I did read book #1 first and I liked it. It's a great book but this one is better.

As of 6/6/2011, this book is now an awards free zone. While I appreciate the awards, I would rather stick to reviewing more great books for you than trying to fill the requirements.
